Commander’s Comments

Preparations for improvement are in the works. MAUX has obtained a grant from Lowe’s to refurbish the campground after the last flood and the woods above the parking lot have received a major trimming and trash and limb pickup. Keith Nicholas received donations from several members to help convert the covered portion of the deck to a smoking area. Much of the labor will be accomplished by both local and Lowe’s volunteers. Watch for the dates of the work parties and please come out and help beautify your post.

Many are unaware VFW posts are graded by the accomplishments of their members. We are required to have programs remembering the occasions that have contributed to the security of our country such as VE Day, VJ Day, end of WWI and WWII, and Independence Day, as well as those remembering our veterans such as Memorial Day, Patriots’ Day, Veterans Day, and Loyalty Day. We are also judged by our clerical efforts in the post such as attaining membership goals, submission of various forms to Department, IRS, the State of Texas and many others. Much of the information on the status sheets have to do with the efforts of volunteers. Stop by the office to view our status sheets. You can help. Success comes before work only in the dictionary… author unknown.

Chaplain’s Comments

There are a few of us considered old fashioned and outdated by many. However, there are a few things to consider before completely writing us off. We won World War II, fought in Korea and Vietnam. We can quote the Pledge of Allegiance and know where to place our hand while doing so. We wore the uniform of our country with pride and lost many friends on the battlefields. We did not fight for the Socialist States or America; we fought for the land of the free and the home of the brave. We are proud to be Americans and we are not ashamed of our country, nor do we apologize for these United States. We are the members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and proud of it. May God bless these United States of America. P.S. Remember, when driving on the winding road, stay in your own lane and do not speed. The wildlife you save may be your own. God blesses everyone…..may He bless you more. Should you need to reach me my phone no. is 903-814-8058.

Auxiliary President’s Comments

To all who came to our Auxiliary Meeting, THANK YOU. Several motions were carried which allowed us to accomplish the following:
-Make an auction gift basket for a Bonham VA fundraiser
-Send a card to a female Veteran who will be 101
-Make a donation to the Bonham VAVS
-Make a donation to the VOD in memory of Barbara Hoffman, our Dept Secretary, who recently passed away

We have Ways & Means raffle tickets for sale for $1 ea or 6 for $5.  The drawing will be held at Midwinter in January for a flat screen TV-40″, Android Tablet 7″, Digital Camera, and several other items. We’re also selling beautiful black stallion pins for $3 ea to help Dept with expenses.  The Bonham VA and VAVS has a new needs list, it’s posted on the bulletin board at the post or see me for a copy. The Bonham VA greatly appreciates our donations.

As of Aug 21st, we are no longer the “Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW”. We are now the “VFW Auxiliary” and eligible males can join the VFW Auxiliary. We have received new membership application forms. If you are interested in becoming a member of the VFW Auxiliary, please contact me or the treasurer, Lori Brouillette. Copies of the application can also be picked up at the post from the bartenders. We welcome male members and look forward to working as one team. The VFW Store on line will be selling a variety of Ladies Auxiliary items now that our name has changed to The Auxiliary. If you order items from the VFW Store on line, the Dept of Texas receives a kick back.

Our District President will attend our meeting on Sep 19th and conduct our inspection.  Please show your support and try to attend this meeting and visit with the Dist President.

Check the calendar and come out to the post for all the programs our Commander and Priscilla McMurry will be conducting this month, along with our Labor of Love Event over Labor Day Weekend. Garage sale items will be accepted starting Mon, Aug 31st. If you have heavy items such as furniture or appliances, please call 972-849-5697 for a pickup. If you’re donating a dish for the food auction on Sep 4th, please remember to write the name of the dish and ingredients on a card so the auctioneer can describe the dish to the audience. Thanks everyone for your support. Please hug a Veteran.  Let them know how much we support them.

Men’s Auxiliary President’s Comments

The September 19th MAUX meeting will be held at Jose’s at 9am. If you need directions, please contact Jose. The MAUX “Help A Vet” program continues to be a positive initiative and we have served two more VFW property owners. If you are interested and would like to see if the project meets the guidelines, please contact Rodney Crouch, Jose Casado or Mike Beck for more info.

The MAUX Lowe’s project is moving along as three projects have been completed. The common area has been cleared of brush and saplings and was mowed. The parking lot has been restriped and two parking lot light fixtures have been repaired. We have two volunteer work dates scheduled for Oct 3rd and Oct 10th. Please come and assist as we will be working on the lower property including the deck and stairs, camp grounds, etc. If you want additional information on the project and what MAUX and Lowe’s are doing, contact Jose.

Last but not least, On September 26th the MAUX will be conducting our fundraiser during Frontier Days in Pottsboro. Our goal is to raise $6,000 and we seek your participation and ask you to stop by the booth and test drive a vehicle. Each test drive will generate $20 and we are recruiting 300 drivers for the event. These funds will help support PVES, MAUX initiatives and Boots, Books and Beyond (a scholarship for veterans). This event is supported by our two yearly corporate sponsors and Blake Utter Ford. Please help us reach our goal.
