Commander’s Comments

At the second meeting at the start of my term (I was at the State Convention when the first meeting occurred) I announced that I was not the commander of the VFW bar. That is the job of the house committee, as are the lot committee, etc. My primary function as Commander is to oversee VFW business as outlined in the national bylaws. I am a member of all committees by virtue of my title as the Commander. This year it has functioned well as the committees and auxiliaries have done their jobs, often querying me as to operation of activities of such functions. The only glitch was that infrequently I would be asked about a particular function and I had not been briefed as to what the event was.

As a post, the VFW and service activities, and there are many, have generally functioned well and glitch free. I want to thank everyone involved; it made my job a lot easier. My term of office, as well as the other elected officials, will terminate upon the installation of the Department Commander at the state convention in Dallas around the 18th of June.

At our March meeting, we will have our preliminary nomination of candidates for office for the 2016-2017 fraternal year. At the April meeting we will continue nominations and then the election of officers. I would ask that more members be prepared to accept nominations and then positions if elected. We can then begin training of the newly elected officers. Please continue your participation in our remaining activities; there are still a few. May God bless all of you.

Chaplain’s Comments

When things are going great and everything is hunky dory—we give Thanks to God for all our good fortune’s and health.  We also give thanks to Jesus Christ.  When things are going well and we are prosperous, we think Jesus is good and wonderful.  But when things go south and we have disasters, sickness or death and financial losses, we think Jesus is not on the job.  It is obvious what is true—God gave you life and placed you on this good earth, but never promised a life of riches and ease.  Some never figure out the difference but God Almighty knows.  Please ask God to help you see this in your own life so that you can change and enhance God’s absolute goodness….AMEN. God blesses everyone…..may He bless you more.  Should you need me I can be reached at 903-814-8058.

Auxiliary President’s Comments

Thanks to all who attended last month’s meeting.  Also thanks to everyone who filled in for the absent officers. Sadly, we draped our charter for one of our members, Phyllis Johnson, who passed away. We elected and installed a new Chaplain, Amy Kurtin, who replaced Monica Thompson.

We have a lot going on this month. We’re having a cake walk on March 4th to raise money for March of Dimes. I kindly ask you to please consider donating a cake, cupcakes, pie, etc. to make this a successful event. Pottsboro spring break is March 7-11. Remember daylight savings time begins March 13th. We need help stuffing eggs after our planning meeting on March 17th for the Easter Egg Hunt on Easter day. Our annual Awards Banquet is Friday, March 18th at 6:00 pm. Please attend and show your appreciation to our public safety honorees which include a policeman, firefighter and EMS paramedic. Also being honored is the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher and Patriots Pen essay winner. Burgers will be served following the awards ceremony and award recipients will be served first. At our meeting on March 19th we’ll have the new member initiation ceremony. If you’re a new member or have never been initiated please let us know and attend the March meeting. All new members for this Auxiliary year will be notified of this initiation by letter from the Auxiliary Secretary.

Officer nominations and elections will be held at our April 16th meeting. Please consider running for an office or taking on a chairmanship. Officer installation will be held jointly with the post’s elected officers at our May meeting.

If you’re an annual member and you have not paid your dues, you need to do so now. If your dues are not paid by June 30th, you will forfeit your membership and will have to reapply should you want to join again. In addition, a vote to double the life membership fees will happen in July at the VFW Auxiliary National Conference. You may want to consider purchasing a life membership before July should they vote to increase the fees at that meeting.

Thank you everyone for your continued support. Remember why we exist… to serve the veterans of this country and our communities in honor of the sacrifices and commitment of every man and woman who has served in uniform.
